Document 'L' of the Building Regulations have recently been updated and will affect all complete installations of timber windows and doors. The amended regulations are a good thing for our customers because it means all window and door installations have to meet stricter thermal performance targets, which are measured in 'U' Values. A 'U' Value is the measure of heat loss; the lower the better as it means the product being measured is a more effective insulator.
When Document L was first introduced this 'U' Value requirement was 2 and only considered the glass in any detail. The new requirements include the entire window or door as well as the glass, and is 1.6 for windows and 1.8 for doors.
All Woodland's timber windows and doors have been simulated through the FENSA scheme to ensure they comply, and our sash windows have achieved an overall 'U' Value of 1.5. In order to achieve compliance we have updated our glass specification and modified our designs whilst maintaining the period character of our windows. This means we are able to offer the best balance of traditional features and modern performance.
All complete replacements of windows and doors need to comply with the new regulations and will be registered through FENSA when installation is complete. Exceptions are repairs to existing windows and replacements of sashes only into existing frames, which are also counted as repairs. Doors which have less than 50% total glazed surface area need to comply but are not eligible for FENSA registration.
