Which products to Woodland offer?
Woodland specialise in manufacturing timber windows and doors. We also manufacture bespoke roof lanterns and can offer Sunflex folding sliding doors.

Which timber do you use?
We use a variety of timbers in our windows but our staple timber is Idigbo*.

What is Idigbo?
Idigbo is a ‘durable’ hardwood sourced from responsibly managed forests. ‘Durable’ is a timber classification. Idigbo is hard wearing and perfect for exterior use; has a beautiful grain and is similar in character to Oak.

Can you use FSC timber?
When requested, Woodland is happy to source FSC timber.

What is FSC timber?
FSC is the Forest Stewardship Council. FSC certification is a process by which the source of a forest grown product is verified.

What different finishes are available?
All our products are fully factory finished in a high quality microporous brilliant white ‘satin’ finish as standard. Other colours and stains are also available.

What is a microporous finish?
A water-based factory paint system which does not form a skin on the surface of the timber like oil-based paints do. The paint penetrates the timber and allows it to breath naturally which in turn, means it will not flake off like oil-based paints.

Can you stain windows and doors?
Yes we can. Stains don’t offer quite so much protection as paints but the darker the stain the greater the protection it offers.

Do your products need maintaining?
Timber is a natural product and it will be exposed to the elements. You will need to maintain your windows or doors but modern paint technology offers much greater protection than traditional finishes. Our products should not require re-painting for approximately 5 years although we would recommend inspecting products after 2-3 years if you live in a very exposed area, or in an area of high pollution. When it is time to repaint simply wipe down with a damp cloth and apply another coat of paint. There is no need for stripping back and microporous paints are readily available from good decorating suppliers or direct from Woodland. Stain finishes require more frequent attention. We will provide more detailed information with your guarantee.

*Due to the uncertainties of timber supply Woodland may be forced to substitute standard timbers for similar grade timber when supplies dictate.

How We Work

Do you need to see my windows to provide a quotation?
We can often give an estimate of costs over the phone or with emailed photos or drawings. Before we manufacture we would always need to carry out a detailed survey.

Can I view your products before I go ahead?
Yes you can. We would be delighted to provide you with some addresses for you to view at your leisure. Alternatively you are quite welcome to visit our works where you can view products both complete and in production.

What happens when I want to proceed with an order?
We will organise a convenient date to revisit and take detailed dimensions before sending you a confirmation of order and invoice for a deposit. We will also book you into our schedule of works so you don’t have to wait longer than necessary for your new windows or doors.

How can I pay?
We accept cash, cheque or direct bank transfer.

Do we employ our own installers?
All our installers are employees of Woodland so you can be sure whoever installs your windows shares our values and works to our exacting high standards.

What areas do your installation teams cover?
As a rough guide we work as far north as NW3, south to Farnborough, east to East Grinstead or Dulwich and West to Woking or Windsor. This is only a guide so please contact us for clarification or view the installation area on our website. We able to supply our products nationally for others to install.

Can you install in conservation areas?
Yes we can. It is usually best to speak to your local conservation officer before proceeding to ensure there are no specific prohibitions in place. Usually windows installed in a conservation area will still be required to comply with document L.

Can you install in listed buildings?
We have installed many windows and doors in listed buildings. Where required, drawings can be prepared by us for inspection by local planning. If you live in a listed building we would advise speaking to planning before proceeding with an installation.

Can you supply products for others to install?
We are happy to supply our products for anybody to install.

What level of guarantee do you offer?
Our windows and doors are guaranteed for a period of 10 years. Sealed units are guaranteed for 5 years and most hardware is guaranteed for 1 year. Hoppe lever handles (fitted to doors) with ‘Resista’ finishes are guaranteed for 10 years.

What is an insurance backed guarantee?
This is a guarantee against our workmanship in the unlikely event that we go out of business during the guarantee period. We are members of Homepro who organise insurance backed guarantees on our behalf.

Do you offer insurance backed guarantees?
We are not regulated by the FSA so we cannot offer insurance backed guarantees. However, having an insurance backed guarantee available to customers is a requirement of FENSA. As a result, your address will be passed on to Homepro when installation is complete and they will contact you.

Do I need to be home when you install?
We will need you to be at home when we arrive to let our installers in, and when we finish to make payment. Aside from that our installers are happy working if you need to go out.

Will you make mess?
Taking out old windows or doors will always make some mess and there will always be some dust. However, our installers will place dust sheets on the floors and over furniture in the areas where work will be carried out as well as through all areas which will need to be accessed during the course of the installation. They also carry plastic sheeting with them for additional protection of items of furniture etc. We will send you further details regarding installation with your confirmation of order.

What if you damage something?
We carry public liability insurance and in the unlikely event that something was damaged during installation we would either make a claim or offer to replace or reimburse you, depending on the value of the damaged item.

Do you give references?
Please contact us and we will be pleased to put you in touch with customers in your area.

Government Regulations

What is document L?
Document L is an addition to the building regulations which came into force in April/July 2002. It is an attempt by the government to go some way to meeting the requirements of the 1997 Kyoto protocol by ensuring homes improve their energy conservation and reduce CO2 emissions. They apply to new and replacement windows and doors in most circumstances, with some exceptions. For more information regarding how the regulations affect you we will be glad to assist, or you can contact FENSA directly: http://www.fensa.co.uk/

What is a ‘U’-Value?
A U-value is a measure of heat transmittance; the rate at which heat is lost. A lower U-value indicates greater efficiency. ‘U’ values are measured in Watts per square metre, per degree Kelvin (W/M2²K). A replacement window must achieve a minimum U-Value of 2 (in England and Wales) to comply with Document L.

Do my windows need to comply with Document L?
The likely answer is yes. New and replacement windows need to conform to Document L. This does not include repairs, replacement sashes or replacement doors where less than 50% of the door area is glass. Listed buildings may also be exempt but you should check with planning first.

How do I know my windows comply with document L?
We are members of FENSA which is a good indication that the windows and doors we install comply with the regulations. When the work is complete you will be issued with a certificate of compliance by FENSA.

Our windows comply because they have a 12mm Argon gas-filled cavity in the sealed unit and we use Pilkington K low E glass as standard. This gives our standard unit a U-value of 2, so it complies. In certain make-ups of window this U-value can be reduced further if required.

What is FENSA?
FENSA is the body set up to oversee compliance of window companies to the new Building Regulations. They have checked our windows to ensure they comply to document ‘L’ and they register all our installations with local Building Control on our behalf. FENSA carry out periodic inspections of our installations to ensure we are compliant. For further information please contact FENSA directly: http://www.fensa.co.uk/.

Do I need a FENSA certificate?
FENSA certificates are issued by FENSA on behalf of Woodland when we register an applicable installation. Replacement windows are usually applicable.

You will not require a FENSA certificate if:

  • Repairs are made to a window or the sashes only are replaced.

  • The window is being installed into a listed building (check with Planning first).
  • You are having other works carried out which require Building Control approval and the window or door forms a part of this work. The window will form part of that Building application and a FENSA certificate will not be required.

  • A door is being replaced and it is comprised of less than 50% glass in area.

When you receive your FENSA certificate please keep it in a safe place as you will likely need to show a copy of it to solicitors when you come to sell your home.
